Sanju Samson on his competition with Rishabh Pant

Sanju Samson: BCCI

Indian wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni has not played any match for India since World Cup 2019. Because of Dhoni’s absence in Team India, players like young wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson got an opportunity to show their talent.

But the first choice of the selectors has been Rishabh Pant and there have been many times when Sanju Samson has not got a place in the team despite Pant not performing well. Seeing this, everyone would say that Sanju Samson would be thinking about competing with Pant for a place in the team, but Sanju Samson has given his own opinion on the issue.

In a special interview with The Times of India, Samson said,

I think it all depends on the team combination. I never thought about all these lines (competition with Rishabh Pant). As a cricketer when you’re competing or when you’re trying to get into a sport, if you have an eye on other players – I don’t think that’s the way to play your cricket.”

We both enjoy batting together in IPL

Samson said that Pant and he are very good friends and in the IPL too, he has batted with Pant many times. Samson added

“Rishabh and I started playing for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL and we spent a lot of time together. We are really good friends. He is a talented player. We really enjoyed playing together. I’ve played a lot of innings with him. I remember one match we played for Delhi Daredevils against the Gujarat Lions. We hammered sixes all over the park and chased down 200 plus. I still relish that partnership with Pant.

Sanju Samson finally talked about his competition with Rishabh Pant. He says

“Whenever people talk to me about my competition with Pant, I like to think about me and him playing together. Not just play, we also have a lot of fun together. I think it will be a really good thing – we are known to dominate bowlers and we have done it in the past as well. So, I always look forward to playing with Pant. I don’t consider myself competing with him.”

On the other hand, Rishabh Pant has played 13 Tests (814 runs), 16 ODIs (374 runs), and 28 T20Is (410 runs) for India. It is interesting to know both the players are yet to play together for India.
