MS Dhoni began his international cricket journey in the ODI circuit with a duck against Bangladesh. However, after that, he rarely got out for zero in his career. Dhoni’s belief was to take the game till the very end, before delivering a knockout blow to the opponent. He did things unexpectedly in ODIs.

Like in the 2011 World Cup match against Sri Lanka, he promoted himself to Number 5 in the order even though he was not in a good form in that tournament. Dhoni finished off the World Cup in style at the Wankhede Stadium. Such was the greatness of that innings that the bat used by MS Dhoni in that knock has become the Guinness World Record holder for the most expensive bat in the world.

Dhoni has also made other contributions to his mind. In the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, Dhoni made a masterful move by bringing Ishant Sharma into the attack in the final match. Sharma ran through the English team and powered India to another historic win. In the same tournament, MS Dhoni launched the new opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan.

It is not that MS Dhoni has never been involved in any controversy. As being a captain of the team, MS Dhoni was always targeted by the media. The rumor mills spread rumors that Dhoni did not want senior players like Virender Sehwag in the team because of their personal conflict. The reason why Dhoni preferred youngsters over seniors was that the young players were quick on the field.

MS Dhoni’s international career

Speaking of his personal achievements now, MS Dhoni played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs, and 98 T20Is for the country. His ODI debut happened in 2004, Test debut in 2005, while T20I debut in 2006. He led India to the ICC World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, ICC T20 World Cup, and also to the no. 1 position in the ICC Test Team Rankings.

He scored 16 centuries in his international career, which also included a double century against Australia at his IPL home venue Chennai. Another special knock that MS Dhoni played at Chennai was the one against Pakistan in an ODI match of 2012.

Dhoni was known for rescuing the team from a situation when everyone believed that India would lose. In a World Cup match against Zimbabwe in 2015, India got reduced to 92/4 against the minnows and they had to chase 288 runs to win. MS Dhoni joined hands with Suresh Raina and the duo added 196 runs to help India win.

MS Dhoni was also famous for his marvelous stumpings. No one could beat his lightning-quick pair of hands behind the stumps. Dhoni also changed the way of running out a batsman as he did not look at the wickets while targeting them. Such was the mastery of Dhoni that even the umpires were scared when he asked for a DRS from behind the stumps.

He always knew that the decision was out or not out even from the naked eye. Lastly, he was one of the few Indian batsmen to aggregate 10,000 runs in ODIs. He only hit two fifties in the shortest format of the game, but no one can forget the way he used to hit helicopter shots against the fiery yorkers from the bowlers.
