Former Australian opener, Matthew Hayden has opened up on the possibility of the T20 World Cup happening in Australia this year. The Coronavirus pandemic has compelled the cricket boards to stop all the cricketing activities worldwide. The sport is only happening in small countries right now.
Talking about the T20 World Cup in Australia this year, all the top-tier cricketing countries of the world were scheduled to visit Down Under to play the Men’s Cricket World Cup. Australia recently hosted the women’s tourney where the home side lifted the trophy.
Speaking to TOI on Tuesday (19th May), the left-handed batsman gave his opinion on ICC’s no saliva-yes sweat rule.
“I find the ICC’s ‘no saliva-yes sweat’ decision strange. These are things which are integral to cricket and I don’t know how it’s going to change. The more sensible option is to test the players properly and ensure that they are Covid negative. If the players in action are virus free, they should be allowed to use both.”
When asked about the probability that the T20 World Cup happens in Australia this year, the legend replied:
“I think the T20 World Cup in Australia this year is highly unlikely. Though the widely-followed rugby league is starting next week here, I will be surprised if the T20 World Cup goes on without travelling fans, more so because it’s a global event.”
Thus, Hayden felt that all the fans should have the right of watching the World Cup live in the stadium which is why the tournament may not happen this year.
