Indian opener, Rohit Sharma has opined that setting long-term goals is not a viable option in life because the individuals always fall short of his expectations and targets. The Hitman believes that it is excellent to have short-term goals and try to achieve them because if an individual achieves his goal, he gets motivated to go big the next time around.

He related the same with the cricket world and told Irfan Pathan on Cricket Connected that when he started playing cricket, he had set some long-term goals. Unfortunately, as everyone knows, Rohit missed the bus for the 2011 World Cup as his performances were not up to the mark.

However, once he changed his approach, his short-term goals helped him become a big player.

Setting long-term goals is not right: Rohit Sharma

During his appearance on Star Sports’ talk show, Cricket Connected, the right-handed opener from Mumbai stated:

“I’ve realised over the years that long-term goals are not very helpful. In fact, it’ll only put more pressure on you. I have always focused on short-term goals. I’m always looking forward to what tournaments are coming up in the next 2-3 months and who we’re playing next, and what I can do against them.”

When asked if he would continue the same strategy when cricket resumes soon, he replied:

“Whenever cricket resumes, we’ll have to see what we’re playing first. Whether it is the T20 World Cup of the IPL. We’re supposed to play a bilateral series against Australia as well. We’ll have to analyse all this and see who we’re playing against. It is important for me to go there and play well. Maintaining goals for each individual series has helped me and even in the future, I’ll look to maintain these short-term goals.”

It will be interesting to see how the players play in their return matches because they may have come out of their fitness routines during these testing periods.
