So it was seen coming after the World Cup 2019 final when England won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 with an old rule of super over. Now finally, ICC scrapped that most controversial rule of boundary count in case of super over tie after the cricket World Cup 2019 final at Lords.
Talking about the ICC World Cup 2019 final at Lords, England defeated New Zealand in a tie Super Over. Yes, you read that correct, Tie Super Over and one team was still able to win the match. In WorldCup 2019 final, England batted second chasing the target of 241 and was able somehow to level the score to New Zealand and to take the biggest match of cricket into the Super Over.
Match went into the super over to decide the winner of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. England batting first in super over made the score of 15 and gave the target of 16 to New Zealand.
New Zealand needed 2 runs on the last ball of the super to win but Martin Guptill got run out while taking the second run and scores still remained equal. But as per the old rule of ICC, In the case of Tie in Super Over, the winner of the match will be decided by the count of the boundary of both teams.
As per the same rule, New Zealand was far behind the total number of boundaries of England. And this rule cost New Zealand the World Cup trophy. And they once again became runner up 2nd time straight after the 2015 World Cup.
But now finally ICC has decided to change this rule after so many controversies. Today, from a recommendation from the ICC Cricket Committee headed by former India skipper Anil Kumble, the Committee agreed to scrap this rule from ICC Events in both ODIs and T20s. ICC issued the following statement on Monday.
“The Super Over as a way to decide results at ICC events will be retained. Both the Cricket Committee and CEC agreed it was an exciting and engaging conclusion to the game and will remain in place covering all games at both ODI and T20I World Cups.”
“In group stages, if the Super Over is tied the match will be tied. In Semi-Finals and Finals, there is one change to the Super Over-regulation in keeping with the basic principle of scoring more runs than the opponent to win, the Super Over will be repeated until one team has more runs than the other.”
So as per the new rule, If match tie in Super Over at group stage then match will be tied. But in the case of Final and Semi-Final, super over will be repeated until one team has more runs than the others. So boundary rule is no more in ICC events.
