The Pakistani cricket team had made history by becoming the second Asian team to win the Cricket World Cup when Imran Khan and his men beat every team to lift the trophy in 1992. However, the Men in Green have not been able to seize the title since then.

They came close to winning the title in 1999 when they reached the final, but since then, they have not made it past the semifinals. They even have a dismal record against India as they have zero wins to their name while playing versus the Men in Blue.

Aamer Sohail feels Wasim Akram is the reason behind Pakistan’s losses

“It’s very simple. Put the 1992 World Cup to one side and talk about the 1996 World Cup. In 1995, Ramiz Raja was captain. Saleem Malik was the captain before that, he was very successful and if he could have spent one more year as captain then Wasim would not have been leading the side.”

He pointed out that till the last day of Akram’s career, there was persistence from the fast bowler’s end to remove the existing captain and take over that role. Finally, he stated:

“Look, the biggest contribution by Wasim Akram for Pakistan cricket was making sure Pakistan does not win a World Cup after 92. Imran Khan should be very grateful to him, and he is, by awarding him the presidential award. If he [Wasim] was sincere with Pakistan, we would have easily won the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cups.”
