A mini IPL in Sri Lanka can be organised, says Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar: PTI

Aside from the coronavirus epidemic, cricket is set to return to England from next month. On the other hand, former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar has expressed the possibility of organizing the IPL this year. Sunil Gavaskar believes that a smaller IPL can be held in Sri Lanka in September this year if Australia could host the World T20 in October.

Former Indian captain Gavaskar feels that since the Australian government has made a formal announcement that 25 percent of the spectators can be present at the stadium during the match. So it makes the T20 World Cup more likely to be held in October than in the IPL.

Gavaskar told Aaj Tak

“After the announcement by the Australian government, there seems to be a possibility of conducting a World T20 in October. Maybe the teams will have to reach three weeks earlier, have seven days of practice games and also 14-day quarantine,”

“If ICC believes that World T20 can happen, then having IPL looks difficult because it could only be held if World T20 is postponed but after the announcement (by Australia PM Scott Morrison), IPL in October looks difficult.”

However, Gavaskar feels that in September BCCI IPL can organize in Sri Lanka or UAE. He also feels it is more practical in the current situation.

“September you can’t have IPL in India due to monsoon. But maybe in Sri Lanka from early September with teams playing each other once instead of a doubleheader. Maybe you can think of that,”

Gavaskar further said that the test series in the bio-secure environment between England and West Indies next month is going to be a good example.

This coronavirus epidemic has effected all sports events worldwide. Many sports events have canceled or postponed. Recently former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi also share the news of him being positive for Coronavirus. But amid this epidemic West Indies’s tour to England can decide the future of cricket.
