In the ICC World Cup 2019, Team India was eliminated in the semi-final match against New Zealand. In which questions were raised from Virat Kohli’s captaincy to team management. The biggest reason was considered to be no experienced batsman at number four in ODI cricket.

Ambati Rayudu, considered to be the number four leading contender just before the World Cup but he was dropped from the squad. In such a situation, Shreyas Iyer has been batting at number four for Team India after the defeat of the World Cup.

On which Shreyas Iyer now believes that his consistently good performance in the last one year has put an end to the ongoing debate about the No.4 position in the Indian team in limited-overs cricket.

Just after the World Cup, Mumbai’s young batsman Iyer was given a chance to return to the West Indies tour. Iyer impressed in the West Indies and he also performed brilliantly on the tour of New Zealand earlier this year.

He was the top scorer with a century and two half-centuries during India’s 0-3 defeat in the three-match ODI series. Iyer scored 217 runs in that series, which is the best performance by an Indian batsman playing at number four in a three-match series.

The debate should stop over No. 4

In an Instagram chat by the Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals, Shreyas Iyer has also said that there shouldn’t be any more debate for number 4 position as he is consistently performing very well. He says,

“I have told this in many interviews. There should be no more questions asked about India’s number 4 batting slot. If someone has played on that position for a year then he has secured that spot. Good feeling about securing the number 4 spot. You need to be flexible but I feel I can bat at any position depending on the condition,”
