Sanju Samson made his international debut in early 2015, but so far he has not been able to make a place in Team India as a wicketkeeper-batsman.
Earlier this year, he got a chance to play in the T20I series against New Zealand but once again he failed to show up with the bat. This is the reason that Sanju is now thinking of following in the footsteps of MS Dhoni to deal with the difficult situation.
Sanju Samson talking with Times of India reveals heavily influenced by the cool mind of MS Dhoni and he is trying to bring this feature to his game. He said,
“MS Dhoni’s calmness and focus in tough situations is something that has influenced me. It is something that I would like to inculcate in my game as well and be calmer and more focussed while batting,”
Samson believes that it is very important for the wicketkeepers of this generation to work on their batting skills. Samson believes that it was Adam Gilchrist and then MS Dhoni who changed the definition of modern-day wicketkeeper-batsmen.
He said,
“Wicket-keepers today are all top batsmen as well. You look around the world, most of the ‘keepers are very good batsmen. Adam Gilchrist changed the game for ‘keepers coming up the order, MS Dhoni has done likewise in the middle order.”
“It is now almost a norm to have a wicketkeeper who is a very good top- or middle-order batsman, as it helps the team add an extra bowler or all-rounder in the team,” he added
Sanju Samson has played 4 T20I matches for India, in which he has contributed only 35 runs. However, in 55 first-class matches, he has scored 3162 runs at an average of 37.64. This includes 10 centuries and 12 half-centuries. He also has 2324 runs in List-A matches.
