Indian captain Virat Kohli is currently captaining the three formats of the Indian cricket team. Under the captaincy, Virat’s performance has not decreased in any way. At present, Virat Kohli is the only player in the world who has the average of more than 50 in all three formats. Virat Kohli has an average of 53.63 in Tests, 59.34 in ODIs and 50.80 in T20.
But despite this, former Australian all-rounder and coach Tom Moody suggest the Indian team to adopt the split captaincy and said that if it does not happen then Virat Kohli could lose two to three years of his international career. Tom Moody told Cricbuzz
“With India’s example, which is probably the most high profile example, the only reason I would prefer split captaincy there is purely to preserve the longevity of Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli is a superstar, we all know that. And he is an absolute delight to watch, to compete, as a captain and as a batsman.”
After this Tom Moody also added the impact of not splitting the captaincy over Virat Kohli. According to him, Virat Kohli might lose 2-3 years of international cricket due to the captaincy pressure in all three formats. He added,
“It’s a completely different pressure. And I would be concerned that if Kohli maintains all the three captaincy roles, are we losing two-three years of international cricket from one of the game’s greatest-ever players?”
Moody said that for the split reads the difference from captaincy, for this he cited the example of the England cricket team, where the limited-overs are captained by Eoin Morgan. While the captaincy of the Test team is in the hands of Root. He said,
“On the [split] captaincy, it really depends. Like for England, Eoin Morgan is not a Test player, he has been, but he is not recognised as a Test player, he is a specialist white-ball cricketer. So it works for them pretty easily, it’s a natural transition.”
Apart from England, many international teams have adopted split captaincy. In Australia, the team of Test cricket is captained by Tim Paine. While on the other hand in limited-overs Aaron Finch captains the Australian team.
There is still a split captaincy in the Pakistan team also. Babar Azam is currently the captain of the limited team, while Azhar Ali is the captain of the Test team.
