Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels that as captain Virat Kohli is doing a great job, India does not need to make different captains in all three formats in the near future.
Many top teams around the world have different captains in different formats. But Team India is one of the few teams that have the same captain in all formats.
India does not need split captaincy: Sanjay Manjrekar
Australia has Tim Paine in the Test, while Aaron Finch captains in ODI and T20Is. Similarly, Joe Root leads England in test cricket and Eoin Morgan captains in ODIs and T20Is.
Rohit Sharma‘s record as captain in T20 cricket is excellent, due to which there is a lot of talk about him being made the captain of the Indian team in limited-overs. But Sanjay Manjrekar feels that there is no need.
Manjrekar said on his YouTube channel,
“Now, my theory of split captaincy is that you don’t go looking to have split captaincy.”
“So if you are fortunate to have a capta in, who is good in all three formats and still a good captain, then you don’t need split captaincy,”
Sanjay Manjrekar praises Virat Kohli’s captaincy and said he is currently excellent in all three formats. So there is no need for split captaincy but in the future, it might happen.
“At the moment, you have Virat Kohli, who is excellent in all three formats. So there is no need for India to look at split captaincy. There might come a time in the future, who knows India might start looking for split captaincy.”
Sanjay Manjrekar further also puts a condition when team India can have split captaincy.
“If India comes to a situation where they have an excellent Test captain and Test player, but not good enough to be in 50 over and T20, then maybe you have a different captain. But, India at the moment are quite blessed and in the past as well, Dhoni was the same, when he was captaining all three formats, he was pretty good in all three formats,”
